"Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Okay, everybody is a Simon Snow fan, but for Cath, being a fan is her life. Cath's sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath just can't let go. Now that they’re in college, Cath must decide if she’s ready to start living her own life. But does she even want to if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?"
I had been looking forward to the Fangirl manga adaption ever since Viz announced its release. I know several fans of the original book and heard so many good things about the manga adaption so I was hyped for this release. In the end I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either.
Gabi Nam's illustrations are beautiful. I love how Nam brought these characters to life. My favorite part of Fangirl was Nam's art. I also applaud Magg's ability to be able to adapt Fangirl into a format that makes it compatible to manga while still remaining true to its original story.
What I didn't like about Fangirl was...Cath. She looks down on people that aren't part of fandoms. Isn't able to understand that geeks/nerds can have social lives. Gives off gatekeeping vibes when it comes to the fictional Simon Snow fandom. Makes fun of a guy for working at Starbucks. And becomes upset when she receives an F after submitting a fanfic for a original short story assignment. The manga adaption makes me not want to pick-up the original Fangirl because I honestly don't want to read more of Cath's thoughts. Everything is about Cath. By which I mean that Cath rarely attempts to understand and emphasize people. Instead of being cute and quirky, Cath comes off as immaturely self-centered. But I understand that the whole point of Fangirl is a nerd learning that there is life beyond fandom. And college is all about getting out of your comfort zone and learning new things about yourself. So I'm willing to read more of the manga series to see how Cath changes, but I'm not particularly fond of volume 1 Cath. My rating: ?? Amazon | Bookshop
