Right now, three blocks away, Meriwether's world is coming apart. At the same time people exist whose lives go on and who are going to the Magic Kingdom. A sob escapes into the room, and I don't know if it's mine or someone else's.
-Operation Oleander by Valerie O. Patterson (pg. 56)
This is a quote from one of my first books of the year. In these crazy pandemic times, I gave it more thought than I probably would have during other circumstances.
My family knows of several close friends who have died from COVID. At least once a day I get 1-3 people at my job angry about our new COVID guidelines.
"COVID is just like the flu. You CAN'T die from it. Suck it up." My family doesn't know of any close friends that have died from the flu. But sometimes I feel like I can't be angry. About 2 blocks away from my job there's a soup kitchen with a line that's so heartbreakingly sad. One day when I was driving in the same neighborhood I saw a large group of homeless men huddled together for warmth as it snowed and the temperature dropped. But I didn't stop. It's moments like those when I feel that I have no right to be angry at the anti-maskers. The pandemic has really juxtaposed a lot of things for the worse. It's maddening.
