Originally published in 1945, I can easily see how Astrid Lindgren's Pippi Longstocking became an immediate hit among children in Sweden. A kind and rambunctious young girl who lives by herself, owns two odd pets, goes on adventures, and makes adults look silly. And of course, all the cookies a little girl could possibly eat. Considering that Pippi Longstocking was published in 1945, there are many things that make her unique as a young female character. Her non-conformist attire (she designed it herself!), her strength, independence, her kindness toward those in society that are often not shown kindness, and her willingness to step in to help others even if she might get hurt. Pippi embraces her youth and enjoys every single minute of it.
It's very much a child's fantasy of freedom and fun. But even as an adult it was an entertaining read. And unrelated to the review...as an adult who can longer fully enjoy the food I loved as a kid, I hope Pippi enjoys all her cookies. Because I definitely can't as much nowadays. My Rating: 💙💙💙💙 Note: I deeply enjoyed the story, but I didn't particularly like this Puffin edition. There was a sentence or two that sounded awkward due to how it was translated. Also, a sentence had "same" when it should have been "came".
