"Chaperones, suitors, and arranged marriages aren't only reserved for the heroines of a Jane Austen novel. They're just another walk in the park for this leading lady, who is on a mission to find her leading lad."
I've been reading Huda Fahmy's web comics for a while and I was so excited when my library finally bought a copy of her second graphic novel That Can Be Arranged. Fahmy is unapologetically Muslim. Many of her comics are about her experiences as an American Muslim and being a daughter of immigrants. Fahmy captures the good and the bad in a humorous and often lighthearted way.
In That Can Be Arranged Huda humorously writes about her thoughts on love and Muslim tradition, failed courtships, self-doubts, the importance of knowing your worth, and how she eventually met and married her husband Gehad.
Western books often victimize and/or infantalize Muslim women. Huda Fahmy is no victim here. Fahmy is a college educated woman who loves her culture and religion. Finding love the traditional way was a choice she decided for herself because she knew that it would be the most fulfilling for her. That Can Be Arranged is a must for those that love cute and sweet romances. While the art may not be for everyone, I personally found it endearing and very fitting with the funny stories Fahmy often tells. I recently found out Fahmy will be releasing Huda F Are You? this fall and I'm definitely putting it in my TBR list. My Rating: ???? Amazon | Bookshop
